It’s been a while since I last went to a pantomime – and by ‘a while’ I mean I can’t remember – so I can’t deny I am pretty excited as I walk through the doors of the Civic Theatre for this year’s offering, Sleeping Beauty.
There are goody boxes and multicoloured wands on sale in the foyer and the auditorium is aglow as the curtain rises for this classic tale.
Everybody knows the story of Sleeping Beauty (even though I was debating the finer details of what exactly happens whilst on my way to the theatre) but this production manages to add some modern twists to a classic tale to keep it relevant to the youngsters in the audience.
iPods and Facebook gets a mention, as do many local landmarks which raises chuckles from the adults watching – “I’ve never seen a man eating Gorilla” says King Stephan, “You’ve never been to The Fleece on a Saturday then!” replies Nurse Nelly…
Richard Earl’s performance as Nelly is certainly a highlight, bringing the risqué humour that shoots straight over the heads of the youngsters and gives a little extra to the mums and dads, whilst Muddles, Nelly’s son, is a ball of excitement.
Princess Beauty and Prince Harry are suitably enchanting, and King Stephan’s bumbling lovability makes him a wonderful addition.
The performances are brilliant all round form the cast and ensemble, however the show is well and truly stolen by the evil witch Carabosse, who does a spectacular job of earning the wrath of the assembled youngsters.
Stephen Carlile’s constant derision of the Chelmsford audience is wonderfully boo-inducing, and flirtation with a front row audience member combined with several nods to the adults in attendance means you just love to hate the old witch!
The whole evening is rounded off with a good old sing-song, and everybody leaves with a smile on their face, which above all is the real mark of a brilliant panto.
Tickets are still available at the Chelmsford Theatres website but are going fast so book up soon if you’d like to experience the magic.
