The Wiz

Based on the classic American children’s book by L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz, Chelmsford Young Gen’s forthcoming show is very different from the Judy Garland version we all know. The Wiz takes the well-known fairy tale in a modern urban direction with an exciting rock score.

The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, and thee years later the film adaption famously starred Michael Jackson as the scarecrow, and Diana Ross as Dorothy.

There are some familiar friends to meet again, including our trio of unlikely heroes, as well as a new take on the villains of the story – think Tina Turner rather than black pointy hats and green face paint! There’s a toe tapping yellow brick road, some rodent law enforcement and some ‘wheelie’ cool Munchkins. Combine these crazy chorus numbers with some soulful solos and a huge hunk of humour and you have the perfect anti-dote for a cold winters evening.

Having searched the local area for a suitable Toto, Young Gen found Stitch, a border terrier who is two and half years old. His owner, Penny Sharp of Chelmsford, said that “Stitch just loves to train and began learning from a very young age,” she brought Stitch along to the auditions on the spur of the moment as he hasn’t done any stage work before or any acting. However, he was an instant hit and has completely won the hearts of the cast. He is almost certain to steal the show.

Professionally directed by Jeremy Tustin, The Wiz is all about the ‘magical’ element of make-believe, with amazing fantasy costumes, prosthetic funky make-up, and a ‘Wizard’ pyrotechnic show to rival any West End production.
